Fujairah is one of the most popular resorts in the UAE, with its own capital, and it stands out from the other emirates. Situated on the shores of the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean (unlike the others, which are washed by the Persian Gulf), it attracts attention with its unique climate – relatively high rainfall by local standards – and a natural environment atypical for the UAE, including green valleys, high mountains, and spacious golden-sand beaches.
Fujairah has a population of approximately 140,000. Unlike cities with over a million residents, it lacks skyscrapers and urban bustle. The emirate is renowned for its developed agriculture and also boasts interesting historical monuments. All the conditions for a peaceful and secluded holiday are created, and Fujairah is the only emirate without hydrocarbon extraction, a pleasant surprise for tourists.
Entertainment and Attractions
Fujairah attracts lovers of history and ancient cultural monuments. The city’s calling card is the fort in the Old City, built in 1670 and repeatedly restored after British bombardments. Today, it is an impressive restored building with towers and battlements. Adjacent to the fort is the Archaeological Museum, which displays coins, household items, and examples of residential buildings, reflecting the emirate’s history since ancient times.
Another historical site is the Al Hail Fort, which long served as the residence of the rulers of the Arab Emirates. Tourists can tour its interiors—living rooms, bedrooms, corridors, and storerooms—and see the production of date molasses within the fort.
Wadi Wurayah National Park is a unique open-air nature reserve with a river that is one of the few sources of fresh water in the UAE. The river valley is surrounded by rugged mountains and lush with greenery. It is also home to a variety of animal species, including Arabian leopards and caracals. Archaeological excavations are underway in the park, where ancient Islamic cemeteries, petroglyphs, and the remains of ancient settlements have been discovered.
Fujairah is also known for its traditional bullfights, which take place every Friday along the road leading to Kalba. These fights, while spectacular, do not involve bloodshed and attract tourists with their exoticism.
