5 Taboos in the UAE

In the United Arab Emirates, as in other Islamic countries, there are many taboos that may seem strange and non-obvious to Westerners. Although local authorities are generally tolerant of tourists, it’s important to familiarize yourself with these rules in advance to avoid awkward situations and spoil your vacation.

1. No eating or drinking on public transport
Consuming food and drinks is prohibited on all forms of public transport, as well as at stations and bus stops. If you are caught with a drink or ice cream on the metro or bus, be prepared to pay a fine of 100 AED.

2. No products containing poppy seeds are allowed
The UAE has extremely strict anti-drug laws. Even seemingly harmless items like poppy seeds are prohibited. Therefore, if you’re thinking of bringing your favorite buns from the local bakery with you on your trip, it’s best to skip the idea.

3. Driving a dirty car is prohibited.
According to local laws, dirty cars are considered an eyesore and a public health hazard. Fines for poorly maintained cars can reach AED 3,000.

4. Photographing people without their permission is prohibited.
UAE law strictly protects privacy. Taking photographs of people without their consent carries severe penalties, including high fines and even imprisonment, especially if the photos are posted publicly, such as on social media.

5. Photographing road accidents is prohibited.
When traveling in the UAE, carefully consider each shot before picking up a camera or mobile phone. In the country, photographing not only people but also government buildings, military installations, courts, and palaces is strictly prohibited. Particularly severe penalties are prescribed for photographing accidents and road incidents: fines for this can range from AED 50,000 to AED 3 million.
