Samarkand is one of the most ancient cities in Central Asia.

Samarkand is one of the most ancient cities in Central Asia, located at the crossroads of trade routes between India, Persia, and China. For centuries, it was an important hub on the Great Silk Road.

The city’s history is steeped in dramatic events: initially, Samarkand was virtually destroyed by the Mongol armies of Genghis Khan, but later, Tamerlane revived it, turning it into the capital of his great empire. Under his grandson, Ulugh Beg, the city became a center of Eastern science and knowledge, thanks to the construction of numerous madrassas. Today, Samarkand preserves unique architectural monuments from Tamerlane’s era that have survived to this day.

Entertainment and Attractions in Samarkand
The crown jewel of Samarkand is Registan Square, one of the most beautiful in the world, surrounded by majestic ancient buildings, minarets, and mausoleums. Here, the art of glazed tilework reached its peak: virtually all the ancient buildings are completely covered in rich decoration. A striking example is the Tillya-Kari Madrasah.

Samarkand’s old town is easily explored on foot. In addition to Registan Square, the Ishratkhana Mausoleum is a must-see – a magnificent structure associated with Tamerlane, where women of the Timurid dynasty are buried. Other significant mausoleums include the Gur-e-Emir, where Tamerlane himself is buried. The austere Rukhabad is one of the city’s oldest buildings, and the Khoja Doniyer Mausoleum attracts tourists as it is believed to be the burial place of the biblical prophet Daniel.

Of particular interest is the Ulugh Beg Observatory, which symbolizes the scientific power of ancient Samarkand. This site is worthy of attention both from the outside and the inside. Don’t miss the Bibi Khanum Mosque, one of the largest religious buildings in Central Asia, which impresses with its scale despite some losses.
