Cuba, known as the island of freedom, isn’t a country of strict prohibitions. While locals face a number of restrictions, tourists are generally treated with more tolerance and often turn a blind eye to certain things. However, this doesn’t mean visitors can do whatever they please.
1. Swimming and Sunbathing Nude
Despite the country’s warm climate, relaxed atmosphere, and general freedom, there’s no place for nudism in Cuba. Swimming or sunbathing topless, and especially without a swimsuit or trunks, is strictly prohibited, and such behavior can result in a fine. However, those looking for nudist beaches can still find them in Cuba, for example, on Cayo Largo.
2. Smoking in public places
This is one of the most surprising prohibitions: despite the fact that cigars are part of Cuban culture and more than half of the population smoke, legislation banning smoking in public places was passed almost 20 years ago. Smoking is prohibited in restaurants, cafes, public transportation, taxis, cinemas, and theaters.
3. Talking about politics
Freedom of speech in Cuba is not as widespread as in other countries, so avoiding political discussions is a wise decision. Issues concerning the political system, the economic situation, relations with neighbors, the government’s mistakes and achievements, and even Fidel Castro are extremely sensitive topics.
4. Driving old cars without a license
One of the iconic pastimes in Cuba is driving classic vintage cars from the mid-20th century. Locals happily offer tourists rides through the streets of Havana in these vintage cars to earn a little money. However, there is an important rule: Cubans must have a special taxi license to transport foreigners. Without one, both the driver and passenger face a hefty fine, and the car itself will likely be confiscated.
5. Staying overnight with locals without special permission
Previously, locals in Cuba were prohibited from renting accommodation to foreigners, but these restrictions have now been lifted, and tourists can theoretically stay with a Cuban friend. However, in practice, this is quite difficult: it requires going through bureaucratic procedures. To simply spend the night with a friend, a tourist must obtain a special permit from the local municipality.
