Taormina is one of the most picturesque resorts in Sicily. It is surrounded by greenery and flowers. It also boasts a rich history and many attractions. The abundance of entertainment and leisure options makes Taormina an ideal vacation spot.
What to see and where to visit
The city is divided into the historic center and the Taormina Mare coastline. A funicular connects one part to the other.
The old town boasts numerous architectural monuments dating back to ancient and medieval times. Churches, palaces, and mansions of wealthy locals are found at every turn. All this is surrounded by palm trees, cypresses, fragrant flowers, and greenery.
A wide range of excursions are also available for tourists. The most popular is a trip to the active volcano Etna. An interesting fact: Etna’s height varies from eruption to eruption. For example, the volcano is currently 21.6 meters lower than it was in 1865. Many tourists enjoy visiting the Alcantra National Park.
The Alcantra is the only river in Sicily that never dries up in the summer. Also, be sure to visit the Alcantra Gorges, formed by the scorching heat of Etna.
Beaches
Taormina itself has no beaches. However, the surrounding area boasts many excellent sandy beaches with crystal-clear water.
Letojanni, served by a bus, also has excellent beaches. There’s a free public beach there, as well as a paid beach called Tropicana.
If you’re not a fan of organized beaches and prefer to bring your own umbrella and sunbathe on a towel, there’s the lovely Spisone beach in the town of the same name. Bus number 22 goes there, stopping at Caparena. Another public beach in the same town is located at Mazzaro Bay, where you can rent umbrellas and sun loungers.
