Oviedo – the center of a unique cultural heritage

Oviedo was founded by the monks Máximo and Fromestamo in 761 on the hill of Ovetum. This site became the capital of the first Christian kingdom on the Iberian Peninsula.

The city has preserved its monastic and royal heritage and remains the starting point for the Camino de Santiago Primitivo – the first pilgrimage route from Oviedo to Compostela through the picturesque landscapes of Asturias and Galicia.

Every corner of ancient Oviedo holds unexpected treasures. The pedestrianized historic center is adorned with countless historical monuments, and charming squares filled with “chigres” (traditional bars) make a simple stroll through Oviedo a true pleasure. The city is filled with sculptures, literally at every turn, the most famous of which depicts Woody Allen, in love with the city.
