Nyíregyháza is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Hungary. While it lacks the richness of its historical heritage and attractions compared to other cities, it boasts a prime location: just 50 km from Ukraine and Romania.
Travelers from these countries are the most frequent visitors to Nyíregyháza’s streets, although Hungarians also frequently come here for weekend getaways. In addition to its beautiful historic center, there are natural attractions, the main one being the thermal lake of Sósztógyégyfürdő.
Nyíregyháza Attractions
Nyíregyháza itself has few must-see attractions. It boasts beautiful old buildings, cobblestone streets, and tiled roofs. But other Hungarian cities also have these attractions. Therefore, tourists tend to venture out into the surrounding area of Nyíregyháza—it’s there that its hidden treasures lie. The Sóstó Ethnic Village is one of these treasures. This open-air museum preserves centuries-old traditions and customs of Hungarian rural life. Dwellings representing a wide range of professions—blacksmiths, millers, and even brewers—were built from scratch or transported from other parts of the country. The village regularly hosts various festivals and events with historical themes.
The village also boasts a zoo and aquarium—one of the best in all of Hungary. Situated deep in an oak forest, surrounded by natural beauty, virtually untouched by humans, it is home to animals from all continents: over 5,000 specimens representing 500 species, including an African elephant, a white tiger, a polar bear, an Indian rhinoceros, a Komodo dragon, and a gorilla.
Nyíregyháza boasts a thermal spring, around which the large Aquarius spa complex, one of the most popular in the country, was built. To experience the healing effects of the local waters, you need to complete a 15-day course.
