Ignalina – Lithuania’s Lake District

Ignalina is a natural destination for nature lovers – here you can enjoy fishing, water sports, cycling, or simply relax at one of the many rural farmsteads. You can also spot hares, foxes, elk, wild boar, and, if you’re lucky, lynxes.

Every tourist who comes to Ignalina is struck by the fresh, crystal-clear air. It’s no coincidence that the city’s coat of arms features white lilies, which grow only in very clean bodies of water.

What to see
Near the city, in the village of Šeimates, is the ancient pagan stone of Mokas. In the village of Ginučiai, there is a working watermill – the only one remaining in the region. A museum and café are located near the mill.

On the shore of Lake Lušiu stands the wooden Church of St. Joseph, built in 1757. An interesting fact: it was built without nails. Ladakalnis Hill offers breathtaking views of the local landscape, with six lakes visible.

The Ignalina region is home to numerous ethno villages, offering a true immersion into rural life.

Ignalina is also considered the center of Lithuania’s winter sports. Snow falls here very early and melts late. Four ski slopes with lifts and snowmaking machines are available. Every year, the city hosts numerous national and international competitions in biathlon, cross-country skiing, and alpine skiing.
At the city’s sports and recreation center, you can work out in the gym, play tennis, swim in the pool, and relax in the spa.

Bikes are available for rent in almost every village in the region. During a bike ride, you’ll see picturesque panoramas: hills, pine forests, rivers, floodplains, and isolated farmsteads.
