Zvolen is located at the confluence of the Hron and Slatina rivers. It is considered one of the oldest in Slovakia. As early as the 4th century AD, one of Europe’s most impregnable fortresses, Stary Zvolen, stood here. It was destroyed only once by the Tatars and Mongols. Its ruins have survived to this day and are now called Puszty Hrad.
Modern Zvolen is a popular destination for lovers of medieval architecture. Today, it is a quiet and cozy European city, especially popular during the Christmas holidays. Few places in Europe boast such fairytale-like rural estates, where festive celebrations are held according to ancient traditions.
Ancient City – Rich History
In the 4th century, the territory of modern Zvolen was inhabited by Slavic tribes. It was during this time that the first settlements and fortification walls appeared on the left bank of the Slatina. After the Tatar-Mongols destroyed the fortress, the settlement was moved to a new location. Old Zvolen is now called Puszty Hrad.
In the late 14th century, Louis I the Great built Zvolen Castle, ushering in the city’s heyday. By the mid-16th century, Zvolen had become a powerful fortress, courageously repelling Turkish attacks. In the early 18th century, it became the industrial center of Slovakia.
Entertainment and Attractions in Zvolen
The city’s most interesting attractions are its ancient castles: Old Zvolen (Puszty Hrad) and Zvolen Castle. The pristine natural beauty and ancient ruins invite long walks. During the warmer months, the grounds of Puszty Hrad host theatrical performances, in which actors act out scenes from medieval Slovakia.
The city is home to several churches, the oldest of which, the Roman Catholic Church of St. Elizabeth, was built in the 13th century.
Zvolen Castle
For many years, Zvolen Castle was the residence of Hungarian kings who came to hunt in the game-rich local lands. Today, the castle is a branch of the National Art Gallery of Slovakia, housing a rich collection of paintings and sculptures.
