Panarea is located north of Sicily, and it is the second smallest of the Aeolian Islands. This island of volcanic origin with a population of only 280 people administratively belongs to the commune of Lipary.
At the peak of the tourist season, the population of Panarea increases several times, and in recent years, Hollywood celebrities often come here.
Panarea is an extinct volcano with an area of only 3.4 square kilometers. Punta del Corvo (421 m) is the highest peak of the island. There are thermal springs near the villages of Maria and Punta di Peppe, and on the coast, between the rocks of Bottaro and Liska Bianca, the remains of sunken ships were found, which in our time have become a popular tourist attraction for divers.
On Panaree, traces of the settlement of the Mycenaean civilization, which lived on the island in about 1200 BC, were found, but the ancient Romans were the first to colonize the island. Only in the Middle Ages, due to frequent attacks by pirates and other robbers, the population of the island was forced to leave it.
Nowadays, Panarea is a favorite vacation spot for celebrities. And in 2000, Panareia together with the other Aeolian Islands was included in the list of UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites. That is why construction is strictly limited on the island, and local communes retain their individuality.
Panarea has shops, bars, restaurants and a disco, an ambulance station and an ATM. There are not many beaches on the island that can be reached on foot, but there is a sandy beach here, one of the few on the Aeolian Islands. Tourists often swim and sunbathe on numerous tiny reef islands scattered around Panarea.
