Liverpool is one of the largest cities in England. It is home to Europe’s oldest Chinatown and the legendary Cavern Club, where the Beatles got their start.
Liverpool Attractions and Entertainment
The architectural landscape of the port of Liverpool is defined by buildings dating back to the late 18th century. Unfortunately, older structures have not survived. The city is best suited for exploring so-called Victorian England, an era named after the reigning queen.
The most popular attractions are located in the Albert Dock area, which is itself one of the city’s main symbols. This former shipping dock, the largest in the country, houses a large number of restaurants, cafes, shops, and museums. Be sure to visit the area south of Hanover Street and west of the two cathedrals, the Anglican and Catholic. This area was once the site of the manufacture of ropes for Liverpool’s many ships. The Granby-Toxteth area near the docks is Britain’s oldest black neighborhood, dating back to the 18th century. Today, this area has been almost completely rebuilt. Some streets with old Victorian houses have been restored and rebuilt.
Liverpool and the Beatles
Matthew Street is a must-see for Beatles fans. It was there, at the Cavern Club, that the famous Liverpool Four first performed. This street is also part of the city center known as the Cavern Quarter, visited by thousands of Beatles fans every year.
Museums and Galleries of Liverpool
The Tate Liverpool branch is located in the Albert Dock. It features a remarkable collection of contemporary art. In addition to the main collection, it occasionally hosts themed exhibitions.
Also located in the Albert Dock is the Merseyside Maritime Museum. It occupies almost the entire northern part of the complex. It features themed exhibitions dedicated to shipbuilders, emigrants, the slave trade, and other topics.
