The Faroe Islands boast a wealth of natural attractions that will captivate every traveler.
The Faroe Islands are not the most popular among tourists. They are sometimes called the “end of the world.” However, the Faroe Islands are among the most beautiful places on Earth. The landscapes here are striking in their diversity: from crystal-clear waterfalls to snow-capped peaks; from rocky cliffs to moorlands.
Attractions
1. Tindhjölmur Island
This small island is located between the islands of Vágar and Mycenës. The island boasts a pointed mountain peak that occupies almost the entire area of Tindhjölmur. A beautiful view opens from the village of Bór, located on the neighboring island. However, the best views of Tindhjölmur are from a helicopter or ferry.
2. Gasadalur Village
The village is located near Vágar Airport and is one of the most popular destinations in the Faroe Islands. But still, you’ll never meet more than three people here. The small houses in this village are perched on a clifftop next to a waterfall whose waters cascade directly into the ocean. It’s a paradise for introverts and people who enjoy peace and solitude.
3. Lake Sørvógsvatn
This lake is visible even upon landing at Vágar Airport. Locals call Sørvógsvatn “the hanging lake.” This is because the lake is practically above the ocean. Looking at the lake from a certain angle creates the illusion that it’s hanging above the ocean.
4. Village of Kjödnuvújk
A small village located on the island of Streymoy. The village is located in a beautiful harbor, surrounded by mountain peaks on all sides. Another landmark of the Faroe Islands is also here: two sea cliffs called “The Giant and the Witch.” On the way to this village, you’ll also see Fossa Waterfall, the largest in the Faroe Islands.
5. Fugloy Island
Here you’ll get a great feel for Faroese life. The streets are usually deserted. You’ll only encounter locals when the ferry approaches, when almost the entire village comes out to greet it. Otherwise, solitude and tranquility reign.
6. Mykines Island
Mykines Island is a true gem of the archipelago. During the warmer months, photographers and nature lovers from all over the world flock here. The island attracts visitors with its beautiful scenery. It’s also home to huge bird colonies, the most popular of which are the puffins, a favorite among everyone.
The old lighthouse is another landmark on the island; it was built a hundred years ago. Before automation, a keeper and his family lived here. In the old days, they were cut off from the rest of the world, and only ships brought them food and news from the mainland.
