Zakynthos is the southernmost island of the Ionian archipelago. Formerly part of Odysseus’ kingdom, Zakynthos is now world-famous for its unique landscapes and azure waters.
The island’s rocky western coast boasts numerous secluded bays, wild beaches, and an abundance of panoramic views, each one better than the next. Navagio Bay is ranked among the top ten most beautiful beaches in the world. In the south of the island lies the party resort of Laganas, with its wide beach and raucous parties.
Zakynthos Beaches
The island’s main attraction is its beaches. Pebbly and sandy, small and large, framed by pine trees and cliffs, organized and wild, and incredibly beautiful. Laganas Beach is the most crowded, densely packed with sun loungers and numerous bars and tavernas.
The stunningly beautiful Navagio Beach is accessible only by boat. This is a completely wild beach with no umbrellas, restrooms, or fast food vendors.
The shallow Banana Beach is the largest on the Vasilikos Peninsula and is perfect for families. It offers umbrellas, changing cabins, sun loungers, showers, cafes, and restaurants.
Xigia Beach is a true natural outdoor spa. Right off the shore, collagen-rich sulfur springs flow into the sea, boasting rejuvenating, anti-cellulite, and healing effects.
Entertainment and Attractions
From early morning, numerous boats depart for cruises along the island’s coast. Boat trips offer a wide variety of routes. A boat decorated like a pirate sailboat can circumnavigate the entire island in 8 hours. Alternatively, you can visit just the famous Navagio Bay with its sheer cliffs surrounding the small beach. The rusty wreck of the Panagiotis lies on the white sand. On the northern side, near Cape Skinari, the entire coastline is dotted with arches and grottoes accessible by boat. In the southwest of Zakynthos, in the Gulf of Laganas, are more caves, the Keri Caves.
Traveling inland through vineyards and olive groves, you’ll also find many interesting sights. You’ll discover natural beauty, ancient temples, monasteries, wineries, and villages with traditional ways of life.
