Bruges is a charming medieval city that seems frozen in the 15th century, completely forgetting skyscrapers, highways, and shopping malls.
Nothing has changed in Bruges over the centuries. Its churches and chapels still inspire awe and respect, its gingerbread-like houses still look like gingerbread, and the market square is still bustling with shoppers.
Entertainment and Attractions
The entire historic city center is one big attraction. Many old buildings and structures are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
A stroll through the city is best started from its heart—the Grote Markt. Tourists enjoy the architectural ensemble of buildings representing various styles and eras. The Belfort Tower is the city’s main highlight. This graceful and massive structure, 83 meters high, was built in the late 13th century. Another interesting building, the Town Hall, is located on the neighboring Burg Square. Its façade is in the Gothic style, while the interior is decorated with pointed oak vaults, wall frescoes, medallions, and a magnificent 16th-century fireplace.
Bruges has many religious buildings with interesting architecture. Near the Town Hall is the Church of the Holy Blood. The most unusual in the city is the Jerusalem Church. Be sure to visit its interior, where its original Gothic appearance has been preserved, including a replica of Christ’s tomb and an altar.
Museums
Although Bruges is not a large city, it would take more than one day to explore all the exhibitions and displays. The Groeninge Museum is a good place to start. It houses works by Belgian and Flemish artists who painted in the neoclassical, symbolist, primitivist, and other styles.
For a historical overview, visit the Archaeological Museum. The exhibition covers the period from the Middle Ages to the present day, offering an interactive and engaging insight into the daily lives of local residents.
Bruges also offers unique tours at the French Fry and Brewery Museums. Visit the Diamond Museum, where the exhibition showcases all stages of gemstone mining and processing.
