
Ghent is a city with a unique architectural complex, at the center of which stands St. Bavo’s Cathedral with magnificent stained glass windows and murals.
Ghent is also known for its vibrant student life, interesting museums, numerous pubs, and the cozy atmosphere of a medieval city.
Entertainment and Attractions in Ghent
St. Bavo’s Cathedral is one of the so-called “Three Towers of Ghent.” The others are the Belfry and St. Nicholas’ Church. In the central part of the city are St. Michael’s Bridge, the Watchtower, and the covered cloth market, Lakenhalle.
The Castle of the Counts of Flanders is another popular attraction in the city. Inside, it houses a prison history museum with a large collection of medieval torture instruments. Other attractions in Ghent include the University Library Tower, the Town Hall on Hoogpoort Street, the Castle of Gerard the Devil, the Graslei street of historic houses, St. Peter’s Abbey, the city’s main square, the Vrijdagmarkt, the Church of St. James, and the Opera on the Brabantdam.
Museums
Museum lovers will find plenty to see in Ghent: the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Stedelijk Museum, and the Museum of Industrial Archaeology and Textiles. The Design Museum deserves a special mention, displaying a rich collection from the Renaissance to the present day.
