Portsmouth, located on the south coast of Great Britain, is a testament to England’s maritime power. This is evident in the large, well-preserved historic docks, where the historic Tudor ship Mary Rose and Admiral Nelson’s flagship, HMS Victory, are on display.
Architects have transformed the old, unattractive port area into a true shopping mecca. And from the top of one of the country’s most modern buildings, the 170-meter Spinnaker Tower, you can enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the city.
Portsmouth Attractions
First, you should explore the main local attraction: the Historic Dockyards. The large square is home to numerous 18th- and 19th-century buildings, including naval warehouses, docks with their original furnishings, a porter’s pavilion, a semaphore tower, a historic police station, a rope warehouse, and more.
In 2013, the state-of-the-art Marie-Rose Museum opened, displaying approximately 19,000 exhibits related to the ship.
On the HMS Victory, you can visit the captain’s cabin, the accommodation decks where over 800 sailors lived, and the admiral’s cabin. The world’s first steel ship powered by both steam and sail, the HMS Warrior, is moored at Portsmouth Docks.
The 170-meter Spinnaker Tower offers three observation decks at 100, 105, and 115 meters, offering breathtaking views of the city and the sea. Also in Portsmouth, visit Southsea Castle, built by Henry VIII, the Cathedrals of St. Thomas and St. John, the Royal Navy Museum, the Blue Reef Aquarium, and the Charles Dickens House Museum, where the future writer was born.
