Switzerland is a fascinating country; for example, it has no recognized capital. But for a number of reasons, Bern, a small, cozy city located in the Aare River valley, is considered its capital.
Most Swiss consider Bern the most beautiful city in the country. For travelers, the most interesting part is Old Bern—a cultural and historical center protected by UNESCO.
Entertainment and Attractions
In Bern, all the attractions are concentrated within the small Old Town. Bern Cathedral, with its stunning stained-glass windows, is considered the true center. The Zytglogge Clock Tower, also attracts many tourists. Thanks to its gate, it was once one of the entrances to the city, and every hour the clock performs a show featuring figures of a rooster, bears, and Chronos.
Fountains are another distinctive feature of the city. All of them date back to the 16th century and are richly decorated with sculptures from the workshop of Hans Ging.
The bridge at the Lower Gate offers beautiful views—it is the city’s oldest bridge, still in operation. Tourists with children should visit the local zoo. It’s slightly out of the city center and takes the form of a large, quiet park, with several fenced areas for predatory animals, while other animals are free to roam.
Museums in Bern
Bern is home to a large number of museums. One of the most popular is the Albert Einstein House Museum. Although the scientist only lived there for a few years, it’s an interesting museum, featuring an exhibit dedicated to his biography and authentic scenes from his family’s life.
The Swiss Alps Museum presents the nature and history of some of the world’s most famous mountains. The Historical Museum boasts a very extensive collection, detailing the rich history of the city and its famous natives.
