In the 19th century, the site of today’s spa resort was nothing more than a small village called Blumau, discovered by chance by oil magnates. They believed there might be mineral deposits here and began drilling. Oil was never found, but a hot mineral spring gushed from the ground. A thermal complex was built around it some time later, and it subsequently became famous throughout Austria.
Treatment
The spa resort specializes in diseases of the respiratory, musculoskeletal, and excretory systems, gastrointestinal problems, and metabolic disorders. Thermal waters flow from three springs: Gaspar, Melchior, and Balthasar, located at varying depths, with temperatures ranging from 47 to 110°C.
Here, you can enjoy a full course of therapy or book individual treatments: mud wraps, healing baths, massages, and beauty treatments. Many tourists come here for 2-3 days to swim in the outdoor mineral pools, visit the salt grotto, or enjoy the saunas.
Entertainment and Attractions
Beyond wellness treatments, Bad Blumau offers many opportunities for interesting leisure activities.
Besides the Rogner Bad Blumau Hotel—an architectural masterpiece designed by Friedrich Hundertwasser and harmonizing with nature—the town boasts several other interesting sites: the Baroque St. Sebastian’s Church, a building dating back to the 18th century, the picturesque Thermenpark with its 1,000-year-old oak tree, the oldest tree in Europe, and several nature trails.
You can also take an excursion to Graz, visit the Zotter chocolate factory, or ride the famous “Castle Road” to the Hungarian border. Bike rentals are available for active travelers.
