
Keszthely is a tourist town at the western end of Lake Balaton in Hungary. Besides beautiful beaches, you’ll find authentic old streets and the magnificent Festetics family palace.
Keszthely Attractions
The Festetics family castle is the town’s most striking architectural and historical landmark. Modeled after famous French palaces, it was built in 1745 in the Baroque style. The palace’s numerous rooms contain a large collection of exquisite furniture and paintings by famous artists. The English Park, a masterpiece of landscape design, surrounds the palace.
Today, the castle hosts international conferences and concerts by popular artists.
Franciscan Church
On the town’s main street is the Franciscan Church. During its long history (built in 1386), it served as a fortress and was rebuilt several times. In 1880, a bell tower was added to the church. Another interesting Baroque structure is the Petkhe House, built on a Gothic foundation. Its courtyard houses an 18th-century synagogue.
Town Hall
On the main square stands the Town Hall, one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. Its premises now house a cultural center.
Sümeg Fortress
Sümeg Fortress is located near Keszthely. It once played a significant role in the city’s defense and was renowned for its impregnability. After 1552, it became the bishop’s residence, and today it serves as the site of fascinating historical reenactments, attracting tourists from around the world.
