The Irish city of Kilkenny

Kilkenny is the smallest city in Ireland by size and population. However, it is considered the second most attractive holiday destination, after Dublin, for tourists and locals alike.

The city’s name derives from the word “church” and the name of the monk Canic, who founded a monastery here at the beginning of the first millennium. The city even served as the country’s capital. It housed parliament in the 17th century after the Irish Rebellion against the colonists.

Attractions in Kilkenny
Located on the banks of the River Nore, Kilkenny Castle is one of the most popular attractions in this Irish city. The first mentions of it date back to Norman times, but it is believed to have been built not of stone but of wood and earth, as was typical for the Normans. Throughout its history, the castle has been rebuilt several times, resulting in a blend of different architectural styles in its current appearance. Today, you can admire luxurious tapestries, rich furnishings, and paintings by famous artists hanging on the walls.

St. Canice’s Cathedral
The cathedral church of Kilkenny is St. Canice’s Cathedral. The first church was founded here when the settlement was founded, and the stone building you see today dates back to the 13th century. The nearby 100-meter-tall round tower is a unique addition to the ancient architecture of the church. Its uniqueness lies not in its height, but in the fact that it is one of only two round towers in all of Ireland that can be climbed.

Celtic Culture Festival
For lovers of unique cultural diversity, an annual festival of Celtic culture and traditions is held here. The program of events includes everything from Irish cuisine and legendary dance lessons to learning the basics of the local language.
