Prince Pribina ordered the construction of the first Christian church in Slovakia here, which has become the symbol of the city.
One of Nitra’s main attractions is Nitra Castle, located in the center of Upper Castle. The castle is the center of the city’s spiritual life and is a vast complex consisting of a monastery, a gallery, and the residence of the provincial governor. Upper Castle also boasts a historical preserve, home to a Franciscan church and seminaries.
The 14th-century cathedral is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city and houses several churches of different denominations. Lower Castle, meanwhile, is renowned for its churches of various denominations, including a Moorish-style synagogue, a Camaldolese monastery, and the Church of St. Stephen. The Palace of Justice and the Nitra Museum can be found in the historic center of Nižní Hrad.
Nitra is also home to one of the largest scientific complexes in Slovakia, which includes universities, schools, and libraries. Nearby is Mount Zobor, with the ancient Church of St. Michael at its summit, and the town of Komárno, with its unique architecture. The palace in Topolčianky, considered one of the most beautiful palaces in Slovakia, is also located near Nitra.
