When thinking of Croatia, the first thing that comes to mind is usually numerous islands, beautiful mountains, and the picturesque Adriatic coastline. But a closer look at the country can reveal a much more diverse vacation.
1) Croatian Islands: Brač – known for its excellent rosé wines and renowned quarries that supplied the cladding for the White House in Washington; Krk – for its beaches, vineyards, and olive groves; Cres – for its lakes and historical monuments.
2) The historical region of Dalmatia – the supposed birthplace of the Dalmatians. Ancient pottery fragments depicting spotted dogs have been discovered here.
3) To the south of the island of Brač lies Zlatni Rat, a snow-white pebble cape jutting into the sea and constantly changing its contours.
4) Mljet is home to the Great Lake, in whose waters floats the island of St. Mary with a Benedictine monastery.
5) Croatia is an ecologically healthy country: clean air, clear seas, Blue Flag beaches, and protected nature areas.
6) Zagreb has a sad and touching Museum of Divorce, conceived by a separated artist couple. Its exhibits feature gifts and other evidence of a failed relationship.
7) The Church of the Holy Cross in Nin is considered the smallest cathedral in the world.
8) The town of Hum, with a population of 28, is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the smallest on the planet.
9) Završje boasts a bell tower reminiscent of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, leaning 40 cm, and Pula boasts an ancient amphitheater reminiscent of the Roman Colosseum.
10) Croatia was the first European country to officially open nudist beaches. It all started with the English Prince Edward VIII and his girlfriend, who once decided to take a dip naked on the island of Rab.
