Tallinn Attractions
Many travelers head to Tallinn to experience the magic of the medieval Old Town. Tourists arriving by ship typically begin their exploration of the city at the Great Sea Gate and the Fat Margaret Tower. The view is stunning – majestic walls, ancient stonework, and a sweeping arch.
At the entrance to the Old Town, there is a large map marking all the city’s main attractions. The heart of the fortress is Town Hall Square, with its monumental Gothic Town Hall building. The top of the main tower offers a spectacular view. However, there is another vantage point from which Old Tallinn unfolds before them – the Patkuli observation deck, located on one of the slopes of Toompeo Hill.
In St. Catherine’s Alley, you can buy unique souvenirs made by local artisans using ancient techniques and watch artisans at work. Small shops are located in medieval buildings, the interiors of which have remained virtually unchanged for centuries.
Don’t miss a visit to Toompea Castle in Tallinn, where you must visit the Tall Hermann Tower. This ancient structure now houses the Parliament. The Old Town also boasts several interesting churches and cathedrals, built at different times and in different styles. Among them are St. Oleviste Church, the tallest Gothic church in medieval Europe, and the Dome Cathedral, where the famous explorer I. F. Krusenstern is buried.
Tallinn has many museums covering a variety of topics. One of the most fascinating is Rocca al Mare, also known as the Estonian Open-Air Museum. It is located in a picturesque park area away from the hustle and bustle of the city. This museum offers an insight into the everyday life and culture of the Estonian people, represented in a variety of wooden buildings dating back to different eras.
