Entertainment, excursions, attractions
The town’s main attraction is the active geyser on Germanei Street. Every 20 seconds, a powerful, boiling stream 18 meters high erupts from the fountain, built at the point where underground thermal waters spring up. In winter, some of the streams freeze, giving the structure the appearance of a giant ice column topped with a cap of billowing steam.
The resort is especially popular with families with children and tourists due to its low prices and high level of service. Furthermore, the archaeological park, with the remains of an ancient settlement and the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, also attracts great interest from visitors. This magnificent structure, erected in the 13th century, resembles a tower from afar, constructed of red bricks bound with white mortar. The carved roof and architraves further enhance its resemblance to ancient Russian architecture.
Rila Monastery is a unique religious complex, listed as a national cultural heritage site. Despite its age, the monastery continues to serve its original purpose: six monks reside here. The monastery grounds, covering over 8,800 square meters, include not only stone cells but also a refectory, a bakery, the medieval watchtower “Hreluvata Kula,” a church history museum, a library, and numerous other buildings.
For lovers of high-altitude hiking, there’s a remarkable natural attraction here: the protected Rila Lakes, located at an altitude of over 2,000 meters above sea level. They’re sure to delight anyone who appreciates the beauty of mountain landscapes and the purity of mountain air.
