This island measures approximately 145 by 50 km and is popular for two main reasons. First, it’s located very close to the mainland, making it easily accessible. Second, visitors can enjoy incredible wildlife and enjoy ample opportunities for hiking and ecotourism. The island also boasts white sandy beaches, picturesque bays, and interesting geological formations.
Kangaroo Island Attractions and Activities
One of the main attractions is Prospect Hill, located on Hog Bay Road, a narrow strip of land connecting the two halves of the island. It takes about 10 minutes to climb the stairs to the top, but once there, you’ll enjoy stunning 360-degree views.
From the summit of Maston Hill, you can see the town, Pelican Lagoon, Strawbridge Point, and, on a clear day, even the mainland.
Kangaroo Island is famous not only for its national parks and reserves but also for its wildlife, which can be seen right in the farm fields along the roads.
Kangaroos and wallabies are common sights in the American River area, frequently crossing the road. Guided evening tours to the penguin parade sites in Kingscote and Penneshaw offer the chance to see penguins in their natural habitat.
In the 1920s, koalas were introduced to the island as part of a conservation project to protect endangered continental species.
New Zealand seals are often spotted under Admiral’s Arch in Flinders Chase National Park. If you’re brave enough to navigate the cliffs and rocky steps, you can get up close and personal with them. Australian sea lions can be seen in Seal Bay Park, located in the south of the island. Anyone can stroll along the walking path above the beach where the lions rest, but descending to the beach is only permitted with a guide.
The South Coast Road leads to Little Sahara, a micro-desert of white sand dunes. Sandboarding and tobogganing are popular activities here, and rentals are available on site.
