Estonian Rules of Life

It may initially seem that the locals aren’t particularly welcoming, but this is far from the truth: they simply don’t want to waste their time and energy on empty politeness and meaningless conversations. We explored what other traits can be considered truly Estonian.

1. Clear Boundaries
Estonians strictly observe personal boundaries – their own and those of others. It’s often said that Estonia is a true paradise for introverts: everyone here avoids socializing whenever possible.

2. “They’ll sort it out there.”
Estonians never feel the need to reprimand someone for improperly parked cars or being noisy, and they don’t get into conflicts with neighbors over an untidy lawn – instead, they turn to the police or other appropriate authorities. This is explained simply: specialists have a better understanding of what is acceptable and what is prohibited.

3. No rush
Estonians are never in a rush, and even if they rarely have to rush somewhere, they tolerate the slowness of others.

4. Thrifty
There’s no shame in saving in Estonia – no one considers it impolite to buy products close to their expiration dates because they’re on sale, wear second-hand clothes, carefully count change, and literally share expenses down to the last cent.

5. Reputation above all else
Estonians deeply value their reputation, and this is explained by the country’s compact size, where it’s almost always possible to find mutual acquaintances.

6. Love of nature
Estonia’s nature has its own unique northern charm. There are many bogs here, but they’re not dangerous or abandoned places – they’re lined with convenient walking trails with excellent internet coverage.
