Every July, thousands of fans of the four-day Roskilde Music Festival fill the city to capacity. And it’s no surprise: this event rivals Glastonbury for the title of Europe’s largest rock festival. In the past, people have rocked out to Nirvana, swayed their hair to Metallica, and danced wildly to the Arctic Monkeys.
If you’re not a fan of this type of music and festivals, you should be understanding of the attendees and the overall youthful, fun-loving atmosphere.
Therefore, it’s best not to visit Roskilde during this summer month. However, the rest of the year, this ancient city delights visitors with the magnificent Viking Ship Museum and the majestic cathedral, the burial place of the Danish royal family.
Roskilde Attractions and Entertainment
Roskilde’s main attractions, as mentioned earlier, include the Viking Ship Museum and the Cathedral. Let’s start with the latter. Many call this cathedral the most majestic and beautiful in all of Denmark. Roskilde Cathedral has even received UNESCO protection. The cathedral has been rebuilt and expanded several times, and today it serves as a living testimony to Danish architecture over the past 800 years.
The Royal Burial Vault contains the tombs of 37 Danish kings and queens. Admiring the remains of so many historical figures may seem unappealing, but it’s truly worth the visit.
Viking enthusiasts will be delighted by the amazing Viking Ship Museum, where you can see five actual ships recovered from the bottom of the Roskilde Fjord. The museum consists of two halls: the Viking Ship Hall, where the boats are displayed, and Museumsø, where archaeological excavations are still ongoing.
