Toro Attractions

Toro is an important wine-producing region located in northwestern Spain, near the border with Portugal, and is also the name of a town of the same name. The origin of the name Toro is speculated upon, but today it is playfully associated with the “robust and powerful” red wines produced in this region.

Wine and Winery
One of the main gastronomic attractions of Toro is its excellent wine. Local grapes are distinguished by their high sugar content, which gives the wines a distinctive character and makes them quite robust. This distinctive flavor of Toro wines is popular not only in Spain but also far beyond its borders. Red wines from this region are particularly noteworthy, having become true symbols of Toro.

Most wines in Toro are made from the grape variety known as “tempranillo,” locally called “tinta de toro.” Besides tempranillo, this region also grows “garnacha,” which produces a rosé known as “toro rosado.” A small amount of the Verdejo grape is also found here, used to make rare white wines known as “Toro Blanco.”

Toro Attractions
Toro is not only renowned for its wine, but also a treasure trove of well-preserved architectural culture representing various historical eras. In the eastern part of the city stands the Alcazar de Toro. This fortress was built between the 13th and 15th centuries as a military stronghold for the Kingdom of Astoria during the war with the Catholic Monarchs, and was later used as a prison. The fortress is currently undergoing restoration.

Closer to the city center stands the Clock Tower, built in the 18th century on a gate of the 11th-century city wall. According to legend, wine was used instead of water during the tower’s construction, as it was more economical.

Also noteworthy in the center of Toro is the Palacio de las Leyes, or Palace of Laws, although only the façade of the original 15th-century building remains. In the city’s main square, Plaza Mayor, you’ll find the beautiful 18th-century City Hall. Also worth visiting is the Plaza de Toros, one of the oldest bullrings in the country.
