Attractions in Avola

Thanks to its location in southern Sicily, the town of Avola offers a sense of historical solemnity and allows you to quickly explore all the interesting tourist routes in the surrounding area. It is conveniently located near the capital of Sicilian Baroque, Noto, historic Syracuse and its ancient Greek monuments, and medieval villages.

Avola is located in a wide, green valley extending from the foothills of the Iblei Mountains to the Ionian Sea. The town’s main attraction, like many others in Sicily, is its Baroque architecture. Avola is also famous for its almond forests and world-renowned Nero d’Avola wine.

What to see
Tourists can admire the beauty of its magnificent churches, among which the Cathedral of San Nicola d’Avola stands out. Its façade is decorated with panels depicting biblical scenes and is divided into three tiers. The courtyard features statues of saints, and the interior is decorated with exquisite works of art, including paintings of the Virgin Mary by Olivo Sozzi.

The ancient town of Avola Antica, located in the Monte Aquilone region, is of interest to all history buffs. Here you can find the ruins of an ancient and medieval city, as well as artifacts that testify to the existence of even older prehistoric settlements on this site.

Nature has created a stunning system of waterfalls in the Cava River Gorge. The most beautiful of them are easily accessible from Avola Antica—just a half-hour’s journey. Continuing along the cascades, you can reach the picturesque village of Dieri. But for an even deeper appreciation of the beauty of the area, it’s worth continuing a few kilometers to the source of the Cava River in the village of Prisa.

Cavagrande del Cassibile is a famous natural wonder located a few kilometers from the town. This vast gorge, surrounded by inaccessible sheer cliffs, has attracted people since the 10th century. Two settlements were located here: one in the north, the other in the south. Today, hundreds of graves, carved directly into the rock, can be seen, arranged on six parallel levels.
