
Manchester is the center of Northern England and the second largest city in the country. Although it has a rich history, industry has always been its primary focus. The city center is filled with warehouses and factory buildings, intertwined with a network of canals and old railway bridges.
Attractions and Things to Do in Manchester
For panoramic views, climb the Manchester Eye, located in the Millennium Quarter.
The historic district boasts a cathedral with the widest façade in England. Also worth seeing are the Town Hall, the University of Manchester, where the chemical element vanadium was discovered, the John Rylands Public Library, and St. Anne’s Church.
Manchester boasts a number of attractions that often escape the attention of tourists: Chetham’s, the oldest English-language library in Europe; St. Mary’s Church, built in 1794; Parsonage Gardens, a great place for a stroll; and other attractions.
Manchester Museums
Ancient historians should visit Castlefield Archaeological Park, home to the ruins of the ancient Roman settlement of Mamucium and the Natural History Museum, which features dinosaur remains. The park also houses the Museum of Science and Industry, which features a variety of exhibits, including a railway museum.
Art lovers should explore the City Art Gallery and the Whitworth Art Gallery, as well as the Museum of the History of Costume.
Other interesting museums include the Museum of Human History on Bridge Street, the Urbis Museum of Modern Manchester, and the Manchester Jewish Museum.
