Balchik is located on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, 42 km northeast of Varna. This port city is the third largest after Varna and Burgas. Balchik’s remarkable architecture—white, red, and yellow houses arranged in an amphitheater-like shape—gives the town a special charm, especially in the spring and summer when the flowers bloom in full bloom.
Balchik Attractions and Entertainment
The History Museum is located in Balchik’s central square and boasts an extensive collection of artifacts dating back to the Roman Empire. The Ethnographic Museum is located on Dimitar Zhelev Street in a house that belonged to wheat merchant Atanas Shterev.
One of Balchik’s main attractions is the botanical garden and residence of the former Queen of Romania, Marie of Edinburgh, founded in 1921. The Queen commissioned Italian designers to create a palace park, a chapel, a summer residence, 10 villas, alleys with millstones, and a castle with a minaret.
The Garden of Allah is one of the most beautiful places in Balchik. Here you can see a silver well, over 200 species of trees, approximately 3,000 species of exotic plants, about 250 species of cacti, and a throne on the seashore, which was the Queen’s favorite place to watch sunsets. Among European parks, the botanical garden in Balchik is second in size and richness only to the park in Monaco.
In the Tuzlata area, 5 kilometers from the town, is a renowned balneological mud complex offering therapeutic and preventative services.
