Vast and always bustling, Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and the country’s most important business, cultural, and tourist center. The city stretches along the banks of the Chao Phraya River, near the Gulf of Thailand.
Entertainment and Attractions
Bangkok leads the way in terms of unique attractions in Thailand. Tourist itineraries typically begin with a visit to the Royal Palace, located on Rattanakosin Island, in the historic center of the city. This majestic complex, surrounded by 2-kilometer-long walls, includes sumptuous 18th-century buildings, pagodas, and a library. This former royal residence still hosts ceremonies attended by members of the royal family.
Wat Ratchanadda is an iconic Buddhist temple complex. Its most prominent structure is Loha Prasat, the only metal temple in Bangkok. Its 37 spires symbolize the virtues that lead to enlightenment.
The Marble Temple is constructed entirely of snow-white Carrara marble, and its three-tiered roof is adorned with glazed tiles imported from China. Wat Saket, located on the Golden Mount, stands 76 meters high and was for a long time the city’s tallest building. The Temple of Dawn, once a royal residence, now offers a stunning view from its observation deck atop its central pagoda.
The National Museum in Bangkok houses an extensive collection of artifacts from various eras, including jewelry, weapons, ceramics, musical instruments, and theatrical costumes. At the Jim Thompson House Museum, you can not only see antiques but also purchase silk products in the museum shop.
A visit to the theater in Bangkok is a unique experience. Spectacular shows are held at the Siam Niramit, and traditional Thai performances can be seen at the Royal and National Theaters.
Bangkok’s nightlife is also worth exploring. One of the most exotic entertainments is the transvestite show, the most popular of which is “Calypso.” The city is filled with bars and clubs that, although they close at 1 or 2 a.m., manage to offer visitors a wealth of excitement.
