Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland and the country’s largest industrial city. Belfast is a popular tourist destination and easy to get around.
Belfast Attractions and Entertainment
The City Hall in Donegall Square is the city’s main landmark. It is strikingly similar to the building housing the South African government in Durban, offering a striking example of colonization and the imposition of English traditions. Free tours of the City Hall are offered daily.
Opposite the city’s main shopping mall, Royal Avenue, is St. Anne’s Cathedral. The cathedral’s architecture is stunning in its beauty.
Belfast is also famous for its Ulster Museum and City Hall. The central Donegall Square, with its Victorian-era monuments, is also of interest. Lineen Hall Library, home to some of the finest treasures of Irish literature, is also located in the same square. The Grand Opera House building was bombed several times, but has been beautifully restored.
Belfast Castle dates back to the 12th century, but in fact, its current form was built in 1870. Belfast is also famous for being the site of the infamous Titanic.
The struggle for Belfast between the United Kingdom and Ireland has left its mark on history. While walking around the city, you’re sure to come across several buildings with war-themed graffiti covering the entire wall. And the expression “Whatever you say, say nothing,” popular here in the 1970s, is still remembered by Belfast residents today.
