Berat is located in southern Albania. Its well-preserved Ottoman architecture has earned it a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Sights of Berat
Old Town
The Old Town is Berat’s main attraction. It is a labyrinth of cobbled streets with beautiful medieval architecture and Ottoman houses. In the historic center, Berat is divided into two halves by the Osumi River: the Muslim Mangalem and the Christian Gorica.
Goritsa Bridge
The Gorica Bridge over the Osumi River is one of the most beautiful spots in Berat. It is one of the oldest Ottoman bridges in Albania. Built of wood in the 18th century, it was rebuilt in stone in 1920.
Republic Boulevard
Republic Boulevard is a beautiful pedestrian street that runs parallel to the Osumi River on the Mangalem side.
Kala
Kala is an ancient citadel located in the new part of the city. A cobblestone path leads to it. The first evidence of a fortress on this site dates back to the 4th century, but the surviving walls date back only to the 12th century.
Church of St. Mary
The Church of St. Mary is an ancient monument from the late Byzantine period. Built in the 13th century, it contains stunning frescoes and icons.
Church of St. Michael
The Church of St. Michael is a small medieval chapel located on a hillside in the Kalaja neighborhood. Remnants of wall paintings remain inside.
