Bordeaux – Little Paris

Bordeaux is the capital of the Gironde department and the entire Aquitaine region. The French call it “Sleeping Beauty,” “Little Paris,” and “Port of the Moon.” The city, located on the banks of the Garonne River, is the largest in France by area, with a population of nearly one million.

Bordeaux is known for its long and rich history with an English influence, which is clearly evident in the variety of attractions, the cozy atmosphere, excellent botanical gardens, and, of course, the famous Bordeaux wines, recognized as some of the best in the world.

Entertainment and Attractions in Bordeaux
Bordeaux, especially the old town, boasts a large number of monuments from various eras.

The Port of the Moon has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007 – it was from this area that the colonization of the Aquitaine lands began in the 1st century BC. The Gallo-Roman port of Burdigala, at the crossroads of maritime trade routes, laid the foundations for the city’s development. Then came the medieval Bordeaux of Eleanor of Aquitaine and three centuries under English rule. In the 18th century, Bordeaux became a bohemian city, inspired by Montaigne and Montesquieu. Then came the 19th century, marked by urbanization, the construction of bridges across the Garonne, and the classical planning of boulevards and squares.

The Pont d’Aquitaine is the longest bridge in France. The Pont Neuf (“new bridge”) is, ironically, the oldest bridge in Bordeaux. The Colbert, a historic warship, is moored next to it, now housing a museum and restaurant.

In the pedestrian center and the neighborhoods of Saint-Pierre, Saint-Michel, Sainte-Croix, and Saint-Eulalie, you’ll find a multitude of magnificent architectural monuments in a variety of styles: from massive early medieval buildings to pointed Gothic and Spanish arched galleries. The Saint-Michel Tower offers a magnificent panoramic view of old Bordeaux.

Place Gambetta marks the beginning of Bordeaux’s elite districts, which extend north.

In the Bordeaux Public Gardens, you can enjoy a picnic on the grass or take a guided tour.

The main highlight of Bordeaux is the tours of the region, including visits to wineries and tastings.
