Elche is a small but stunningly picturesque city located in the province of Alicante. It is surrounded by a vast palm grove, considered the largest in Spain, and date palm orchards. The city itself has no beaches, but the Costa Blanca coastline is just 15 kilometers away, and a picturesque river flows through Elche.
Elche Attractions and Activities
Elche offers unique natural attractions that make it a truly breathtaking place to visit. The city is surrounded by the stunning Palmeral de Elche palm forest, the largest in Europe, stretching over 5 square kilometers. Here you will find date palm orchards and the Royal Palm, which has existed for over 160 years and attracts attention with its seven symmetrical trunks growing from a single root.
At the end of the 19th century, a remarkable archaeological discovery was made in Elche – the “Lady of Elche.” This bust of a woman wearing a unique headdress, dating back to the ancient Iberian period, was a valuable find.
Today, it can be seen in the Archaeological Museum of Madrid, but it has also become a symbol of Elche and is found throughout the city in the form of copies and souvenirs.
Another important architectural landmark of Elche is the Basilica of Santa Maria. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, combining various architectural styles, ranging from Gothic to Classical. Built on the site of an old mosque in 1334, it was destroyed or damaged several times, but was finally completely restored in 1784. A significant feature of the basilica is the observation deck on the bell tower, offering stunning views of the city. Also nearby is the Gothic tower of La Calahorra, a remnant of the city walls. Not far from here, you can visit the 14th-century Arab Baths, an interesting historical structure.
