Fasano is located in a secluded and picturesque corner where the low hills and cave-drenched plains of Apulia meet the turquoise waves of the Adriatic Sea.
The town’s history dates back to ancient times—it was mentioned by Horace as early as 38 BC—but a real settlement only emerged here in 1088, when the inhabitants of the port of Egnazia decided to move inland to escape the pirates who frequently attacked the coast. Fasano might be an ordinary southern Italian town if not for its famous zoo. It is one of the largest zoos not only in the Apennines but in all of Europe. It attracts tens of thousands of tourists to the town annually.
Fasano Attractions
The snow-white historic center of Fasano is a stunning labyrinth of narrow streets, arches, staircases, and small squares. Among the city’s most famous landmarks are the Baroque Cavalieri Arch, the unique gateway to Via Bali, and the Palace of the Knights of Malta, which now serves as the city hall. Piazza Cia is the true center of the city, surrounded by historic buildings, perfect for leisurely strolls with an ice cream cone. But the main attraction for tourists is the Fasanolandia Zoo.
Its unique feature is that some animals are allowed to roam freely and interact with visitors.
Furthermore, visitors can explore the zoo not only on foot but also by sightseeing bus or in their own car—it’s a true safari!
Fasanolandia consists of several sections:
- The Aquarium, where you can see sea lions and penguins and enjoy shows featuring marine life;
- The Large Mammal Section, which includes homes for hippos, seals, polar bears, and gibbons.
- The walking trail passes islands home to chimpanzees, gorillas, hyenas, leopards, jaguars, ostriches, and other animals;
- The Tropical Fish Hall and Serpentarium, where you can see various species of snakes, turtles, iguanas, alligators, chameleons, geckos, giant spiders, butterflies, and scorpions;
- The Ornithological Section, featuring exotic birds, including macaws and cockatoos.
Fasanolandia also features an amusement park with roller coasters, a haunted train, and bumper cars.
