Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the largest coral reef systems on Earth, located in the Coral Sea, north of Australia. It consists of 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands, stretching for 2,600 km and covering an area of approximately 344,400 km². It is the largest structure in the world created by living organisms. In the north, the reef is virtually continuous, located just 50 km from the coast of Australia. In the south, it breaks up into groups of individual reefs, in some places extending 300 km from the coast.

The reef is made up of billions of coral polyps—microorganisms that create the magical underwater world of coral islands. However, it is incredibly fragile and vulnerable. If the water temperature rises by just one degree, the rare algae and coral polyps will begin to die. Therefore, the Australian government has established special rules for visiting the reef: touching the reef with your hands is prohibited during diving excursions, and camping is permitted only on designated islands.
