The Hardangerfjord captivates with its views: mountains, glaciers, gently sloping shores, and a mild climate. Tourists come here to fish, boat, and admire impressive waterfalls. This fjord is considered one of the best vacation spots in Norway.
Activities and Attractions in the Hardangerfjord
Norwegians love their country, care for it, and happily share with visitors how wonderful it is to live here.
Eidfjord Nature Center
This extensive cultural and nature center offers an in-depth introduction to Norway: its landscapes, climate, people, and animals. The center features rare exhibits, an aquarium, and interactive stations. Panoramic views showcase the country’s beauty, allowing you to soar above the mountains, valleys, waterfalls, and glaciers.
Maritime Museum
A wonderful place for family excursions. Here you can see how Norwegians built boats and ships throughout the ages. Craftsmen at work in the museum craft the parts of future vessels right before visitors’ eyes.
Vøringsfossen
One of Norway’s most famous waterfalls, located in Hordaland county. The waterfall rises 182 meters, and its turbulent waters flow into the Bjøreya River, which flows through mountain forests. Near the waterfall is a viewing platform where tourists gather to see the frequent rainbows, making Vøringsfossen a “rainbow waterfall.” Be careful not to fall off the rocky ledge.
Hardangervidda Plateau
This is home to the largest reindeer population in Northern Europe. Renowned polar explorers Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen used the plateau to prepare for their expeditions. There are numerous cycling and skiing routes here. Fishermen try their luck on the mountain lakes and narrow arms of the Sørfjord. In the northwest of the plateau is one of Norway’s largest glaciers, Hardangerjøkulen, and the 1,700-metre-high Mount Horteigen is visible from anywhere on the plateau.
