Holidays in Bulgaria offer a long Black Sea coastline with wide beaches, picturesque mountains, spa resorts, and fascinating cultural and natural attractions.
Mountain Holidays
Former Soviet ski resorts have been transformed into resorts renowned far beyond the country’s borders. The top three include Borovets, Bansko, and Pamporovo. Characteristic features include numerous trails for beginners and intermediate skiers; variable weather with sudden climate changes; and a relatively short ski season, especially compared to countries blessed with the Alps.
Among the advantages are the nearby cultural attractions and mineral springs, which make a mountain holiday more diverse.
Beach Holidays
Most tourists come to Bulgaria for seaside resorts, seeking to combine the local flavor with the familiar Black Sea climate. The three most famous destinations—Albena, Golden Sands, and Sunny Beach—are located in Northern and Southern Bulgaria. The Bulgarian coastline is characterized by wide beaches with fine, golden sand. They also feature gentle slopes into the water and the possibility of strong waves, during which swimming is prohibited.
Cultural attractions are usually located nearby, making it possible to combine a beach holiday with excursions. A vibrant nightlife is possible within the larger cities.
Balneology
Distinctive features of Bulgarian balneological resorts include therapeutic mud, mineral waters, the local climate, and a long-standing healing tradition. A variety of cosmetic treatments are also available, and some hotels offer them without a prior consultation.
