Kilkenny Attractions

Kilkenny is one of the most popular cities in Ireland. The city is world-famous for its nightlife, but it also boasts many medieval buildings. It is also known as the Marble City due to the black polished limestone quarried here.

Main Attractions
Kilkenny Castle and Gardens
The castle is the city’s main landmark, built in the Norman style. Its windows overlook the River Nore. Many tourists and locals stroll through its vast wooded gardens.

Black Abbey
Founded in 1225, the Black Abbey will amaze you with its beautiful stained glass windows. Nearby, on Abbey Street, stands the Black Freren Gate, the only remaining landmark of the old city walls.

Rote House
Rote House is a unique trading house, built in the 16th century. It consists of a group of three buildings. Roth House houses the Kilkenny Museum of the Development of the City.

St. Canice’s Cathedral
St. Canice’s Cathedral was built over 800 years ago and is considered the second largest medieval cathedral in the country. Be sure to visit one of the round towers, which offers the best views of the city.

Butler House
Butler House was built in the style of a French chateau. The building is now the residence of the Butler family, which has managed the city for many years.

Smithwick’s Brewery
Smithwick’s Brewery is the oldest brewery in Ireland, founded in 1221. At various times, the brewery produced Kilkenny Beer, Smithwick’s Beer, and even Budvar.

St. Mary’s Cathedral
St. Mary’s Cathedral is the city’s main Catholic cathedral. Its construction was completed in 1857.

Tolsale
Tolsale is the town hall, built in 1765. It is a unique structure with vaulted galleries.

St. Ciaran’s College
This beautiful Gothic-style building was completed in 1840. It initially housed a boarding school. Today, it is a renowned hurling academy.
