Maribor Attractions

Maribor, Slovenia’s second-largest city, serves as the capital of the historical region of Lower Styria. The city’s official founding date is 1254, although references to it can be found in earlier chronicles. From the 13th century onward, Maribor experienced rapid development, gradually becoming an important trading hub for the region. In the 16th century, the city withstood numerous sieges by Turkish troops, who regularly raided the Styrian lands.

The center of Maribor’s historic center is the Main Square, where a memorial column was erected in 1743 to commemorate the end of the plague. A gilded statue of the Virgin Mary crowns the column, and six sculptures and a white marble altar surround it, creating a striking Baroque ensemble. The square is also surrounded by important buildings, such as the 18th-century Baroque Church of St. Eloysius and the Town Hall, with its majestic stone balcony adorned with the city’s coat of arms, a dove flying over the fortress gates.

Other notable buildings in Maribor include the 17th-century Church of St. Barbara, the Minorite Monastery, founded before the city’s charter, and the Salesian Sisters’ Chapel, each of which adds unique character to the city. One of the most iconic historical monuments is Maribor Castle, built in the 15th century by Frederick III. Over the years, the castle has undergone numerous modifications, and it is now difficult to classify it as belonging to any single architectural style.

The castle is surrounded by Svoboda Square, General Maistre Square, and Castle Square, which are always bustling with activity, as the area attracts tourists with its numerous souvenir shops, cafes, and restaurants. Among these centuries-old landmarks, the University of Maribor, founded in 1961, stands out. Despite its youth, the university has already gained popularity among the country’s youth, and an increasing number of high school graduates are choosing it for their education. The University Clinical Center, located in the city, is also renowned beyond Slovenia for its research and patient care at four clinics, which welcome patients from all over the world.
