San Cristobal Attractions

The Mexican city of San Cristobal has retained its authenticity. Visiting it is like stepping back in time and experiencing what the natives experienced centuries ago—the atmosphere of an ancient city where time seems to stand still.

San Cristobal Attractions and Activities
The Amber Museum is a cozy place where locals love to shop for amber crafts. Adjacent to the museum is a cozy park that blends harmoniously with the street’s atmosphere. There’s also a cool terraced park with stairs and trellises, an ideal spot to escape the midday heat.

Inside the museum, you can see amazing photographs and amber crafts. Mexican amber is darker in color and harder than Baltic amber. Before purchasing, make sure the items are truly made of amber, not glass. Palenque is the remains of an ancient Mayan city that seems straight out of an Indiana Jones film. Among the ruins of this ancient Mayan cultural and political center, you can see an ancient tower, the remains of a palace, the Temple of the Sun, and the Temple of the Inscriptions. Locals believe the walls of the Palace of the Inscriptions depict a Mayan astronaut piloting a spaceship.

Souvenirs and Markets
San Cristobal is a hub of diverse Native American cultures, home to the descendants of the Mayan tribes: the Tzotziles, Tzeltales, and Choles. Each village has its own unique style: distinctive clothing, jewelry, characteristic colors, embroidery motifs, and handicrafts. Locals are happy to offer tourists traditional Native American clothing and household items. Once a week, usually on Saturdays or Sundays, Native Americans from neighboring villages come to the city for the market or simply stroll the streets, offering jewelry and other goods. Here you can buy amulets against evil spirits, dishes, musical instruments, and much more.
