Shopping in Montevideo

In Montevideo, consider purchasing genuine leather goods, such as shoes, clothing, and accessories. Uruguayan leather is known for its high quality and craftsmanship, and prices for finished products are much lower than in Europe.

Shop Hours
Shops in the capital are typically open from 9:00 AM to 6:30-7:00 PM on weekdays, while large shopping centers close later, around 9:00-10:00 PM. On Saturdays, stores are open until 1:00-2:00 PM, and Sundays are closed. Markets generally follow these hours, but some are also open on Sundays.

Shopping
The best places to shop are shopping centers and artisan fairs. Here are some of the large shopping centers in Montevideo:

  • Montevideo Shopping is one of the city’s largest malls. It features American brands, as well as electronics stores and a food court.
  • Punta Carretas Shopping is undoubtedly the city’s most beautiful shopping center. Its colonial-style building attracts not only tourists but also locals.
  • Tres Cruces is a shopping center with a European atmosphere. It sells leather goods, jewelry, clothing, and souvenirs.
  • Vaiven Outlet is a Montevideo outlet store that, although small, offers a good selection of American and Brazilian brands. Discounts of up to 70% are offered year-round.

Markets
The best local produce can be found at the markets. The most famous is Mercado del Puerto, located in a historic building. It sells cheeses, cured meats, wine, and other excellent goods. The market also features excellent meat restaurants and pavilions selling leather goods and traditional clothing.

Another place worth visiting is Mercado de los Artesanos, a craft fair where you can buy unique handmade items from local artisans. At the Feria de Tristan Narvaja mobile market you can find national costumes, vintage accessories, rare books and records.
