Sorrento is located on the edge of the Sorrento Peninsula south of Naples, on a high plateau right by the sea. Peace and tranquility reign here, and swimming in the Mediterranean is just one of the many delights.
Sorrento’s main advantage is its unique natural beauty: picturesque landscapes, sea breezes, abundant vegetation, and healthy air. This resort is ideal for those who want to combine a beach holiday with exciting excursions. Here you can relax and enjoy life, strolling through fragrant lemon groves to fishing villages and sampling local lemon delicacies. Incidentally, the lemon is considered the symbol of Sorrento, and its local varieties are much larger than usual. The entire region is permeated with the inimitable aroma of citrus fruits, which grow everywhere here. Sorrento
Attractions
The Duomo Cathedral in the center of Sorrento on Via Corso is one of the city’s main attractions.
Built in the 11th century, it has undergone several renovations over the years. The cathedral’s exterior façade, visible today, was built in the neo-Gothic style in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Inside, majolica, wood carvings, and frescoes by Naples masters can be seen. Particularly noteworthy is the baptismal font inside the cathedral, where the poet Torquato Tasso was baptized in the mid-16th century. The bell tower, which preserves memories of Byzantium, is also a popular tourist attraction, featuring an ancient ceramic clock.
The old town also features Piazza San Antonio and the Basilica of San Antonio. Near the piazza, there is an information desk where you can get free leaflets, maps, and local transportation schedules. The 18th-century Church of San Francesco is renowned for its picturesque flower galleries, and its garden offers magnificent views of the Gulf of Naples. Every year, the famous “Sorrentine Summer of Music” festival takes place in its 13th-century courtyard.
