Activities and Attractions in the Valley of Roses
Roses
The Valley of Roses is the main attraction of this place. Roses were brought to the valley by the Turks from India in the 17th century, and since then, the favorable climate and growing conditions have facilitated their growth. The harvest takes place from May 20th to June 20th, and essential oil is extracted from the rose petals, which is in high demand both locally and internationally.
Rose Museum
The museum’s exhibition is dedicated to the development of rose oil production, from the Bulgarian National Revival to the present day, and consists of documents and photographs. Visitors can also see tools used in rose cultivation, as well as vessels used for storing and transporting rose oil and rose water.
Rose Festival
The Rose Valley hosts an annual festival dedicated to the cult of roses. It takes place in the summer, coinciding with the petal harvest. Each year, the event takes place either in Kazanlak or in the neighboring town of Karlovo, with residents of Kazanlak organizing the festival in even-numbered years, and residents of Karlovo in odd-numbered years.
The celebration begins in the rose gardens, where the ceremonial harvesting of petals takes place, which are then used to weave wreaths. The festival then moves into the city, spreading through the streets with an extensive cultural program.
