Formentera is the southernmost and smallest of the Balearic Islands. It is located 6 km from party-loving Ibiza, yet remains quiet and peaceful.
Formentera is unlike the other Balearic Islands and, to tourists, resembles Greece more than Spain: it boasts a diverse array of underwater life, exceptionally clear seas, and some of the best seafood in the country.
Formentera Beaches
Formentera is one of the best beach destinations in the entire Mediterranean.
There is no developed tourist infrastructure here, such as sun loungers, bars, or scooter rentals. The main attractions of these beaches are their white sand, crystal-clear air, and turquoise-green sea.
Formentera’s turquoise-green waters owe their color to the Posidonia meadows located at a depth of 40 meters. This underwater plant provides shelter and food for a wide variety of marine creatures. UNESCO has declared the Posidonia colony a biosphere reserve, and Formentera itself and its surrounding waters a World Heritage Site.
The island’s most popular beaches:
Playa Illetes is perfect for those seeking a high-quality beach holiday. This beach has white sand and incredibly clear water, with all the underwater life visible at a glance.
Cala Saona is a secluded bay overlooking Ibiza and the “mystical mountain” of Es Verda.
Playa de Pujols in the town of Es Pujols has been awarded the Blue Flag, the highest standard of environmental cleanliness.
Playa de Migjorn is a five-kilometer stretch of pristine sand, where it’s easy to find a secluded, quiet spot for a relaxing break.
Cuisine and Restaurants
Seafood is the local specialty. You’ll find it served in every local restaurant, even the cheapest eatery. Almost everywhere they prepare fish platters, mussels in wine, and a signature dish—lobster in olive oil with garlic.
Formentera has developed culinary routes, the main one of which passes through wineries, such as Bodega Cap de Barbaria and Bodega Terramo.
The local wines are light and predominantly white, and Frigola liqueur, flavored with thyme and other wild herbs, is a popular aperitif.
