Varna is the tourist capital of Bulgaria and the third most populous city in the country. Situated at the same latitude as Cannes, Nice, Monaco, and Livorno, Varna is surrounded by numerous vineyards, orchards, and deciduous forests.
Attractions
A stroll through Varna is a pleasant diversion for tourists tired of swimming in the sea. In the very center, on Cyril and Methodius Square, stands the 19th-century Dormition of the Virgin Mary Cathedral.
Between the Clock Tower, built in 1880, and the Opera House, there is a small market. Here you can buy paintings, wood carvings, souvenirs, jewelry, and leather goods.
Seaside Park. This vast park, covering approximately 80 hectares, stretches along the seashore. It includes a Luna Park, a zoo, a dolphinarium, an aquarium, a planetarium, and a terrarium.
The Archaeological Museum displays a large collection of Paleolithic building models and ancient art.
The Ethnographic Museum presents customs, crafts, folk art, and urban life in northeastern Bulgaria.
The Natural History Museum displays specimens of the flora and fauna of Bulgaria and the Black Sea.
The Museum of History and Art displays an exceptionally rich collection, including a highly valuable exhibit, the Varna Gold Treasure—the oldest processed gold in the world.
Varna also regularly hosts numerous film and folklore festivals. There are many nightclubs, cafes, restaurants, and taverns.
Varna’s Best Beaches
Bunite or Rapongi has been awarded the EU Blue Flag for the past three years. This is an excellent indicator of cleanliness and ecology.
The beach offers numerous activities for children and adults, including beach volleyball and water rides. There are also numerous cafes, bars, and bistros along the shore.
Varna Beach is Varna’s main and largest beach. It offers a variety of entertainment options, including the Barakuda diving club; tennis and volleyball courts; the nearby Seaside Park with a dolphinarium and zoo; children’s play areas; nightclubs; and beach discos.
Officers’ Beach is located a kilometer from the center of Varna, within the Seaside Park. The beach offers children’s playgrounds; a pool with hydrogen sulfide water; and water attractions.
