Veliko Tarnovo – the ancient capital of Bulgaria

Veliko Tarnovo attracts many tourists for two reasons: firstly, its incredible beauty, and secondly, the availability of affordable real estate. Who wouldn’t want to own a house in a quiet Bulgarian town, where they can spend the summer or the rest of their lives?

Entertainment and Attractions in Veliko Tarnovo
In Veliko Tarnovo, you can easily immerse yourself in the 12th and 13th centuries. One of the city’s main historical monuments is Tsarevets Fortress, the former residence of the Bulgarian Tsar and Patriarch. Due to its location, the city played a key role in the country’s struggle against the Byzantine Empire, and as a result, it became the economic and intellectual center of the state. The entire city was built around the royal residence, which is located at the top of Mount Tsarevets.

Another landmark in Veliko Tarnovo is the Church of the Holy Forty Martyrs, located at the foot of Tsarevets Fortress. It was built in the early 13th century to commemorate the victory over the Byzantine Emperor Theodore Comnenus. During the Turkish occupation, the church was converted into a mosque, but in the late 19th century, it was restored to its original function.

The Archaeological Museum features exhibits that allow visitors to delve into the past nine centuries. One of the most valuable finds is a gold bar, considered the oldest in the world and a true treasure from the Neolithic era. The Old Town is the heart of Veliko Tarnovo. Within a small area, it houses Bulgarian architectural monuments, such as a Turkish konak, used by the police in the 19th century. Nearby are the churches of Saints Constantine and Helena and Saints Cyril and Methodius. Tourists can also visit craft workshops and the Hadji Nikola Inn, reminiscent of a Constantinople caravanserai. Next to the building is the House with the Monkey, decorated with a striking figure under the bay window.
