What tourists complain about in China

From the Great Wall of China to the skyscrapers of Shanghai, thousands of people travel every year to experience China’s unique culture. However, sometimes after returning home, tourists have mixed feelings and perceive the country more negatively than positively. What is the source of this disappointment?

1. Littering everywhere and eating a lot
In public places, Chinese people often throw garbage right under their feet. This usually includes packaging and leftovers, as food is consumed everywhere, including on public transportation, where it can be difficult to find a seat due to the abundance of trash on the floor. Furthermore, their snacks often disgust Westerners.

2. Spitting in a foreigner’s soul
In China, you can often see signs saying “No spitting.” In ancient times, swallowing saliva and phlegm was considered unhealthy. Even at official events, high-ranking officials were always provided with a special vessel for spitting. This custom has persisted for many years. Currently, authorities are trying to get rid of it, but these efforts have not yet been very successful.

3. On the Brink of Environmental Disaster
China’s rapid development is impacting the environment. The harmful effects of polluted air are felt not only by residents of numerous megacities but also by temporary visitors. During their vacations, tourists often encounter problems such as coughs and runny noses caused by the unfavorable environmental conditions.

4. Metropolitan Subways
A ride on the Chinese subway during rush hour is a true adventure for extreme thrill-seekers. Passengers rush to board in droves, not waiting for anyone to get off. Due to the overloaded transportation system, subway specialists are literally packing people into overcrowded cars.

5. Internet Control
Since 2003, China has operated one of the most advanced systems for restricting internet content, known abroad as the Great Firewall. It blocks many popular foreign websites. Even when using reliable VPN connections, connection speeds remain very slow.
